The Formulations Chemist is a role within the Research and Development Department which reports directly to the Director of Research and Development. In this role, the successful candidate is expected to follow  trends in chemical raw ingredients and identify new compatible ingredients for the development of antiscalants, cleaners and other reverse osmosis chemical needs. They will work directly with global R&D product development teams, marketing and business functions to identify new products that are cost effective solutions to challenges in the reverse osmosis industry. The successful candidate will have strong understanding of polymers, surfactants and buffers and open to new ideas and innovations.

Main Areas of Responsibility:

Design and execute new formulations following the standard operating procedures for R&D product development and work with financing and marketing to determine the most cost effective products to meet market needs. Work with regional and global sales support teams to identify product portfolio gaps for both global and regional needs. Identify enhancements to current products and troubleshoot product quality issues working closely with the QC and regulatory specialist. Create annual product development timelines and budget request for new product development and present quarterly findings to upper management.

Specific job duties are as follows:

  • Create, design and evaluate formulations across various reverse osmosis chemical applications including pretreatment chemicals, antiscalants, cleaners and post treatment chemicals for reverse osmosis and filters.
  • Research and test new raw ingredients for compatibility with membranes.
  • Develop working relationships with vendors and attend vendor meetings.
  • Brainstorm new product developments with other global R&D members based on personal experience, market insights, competitive position, online research and technology/market trends.
  • Closely collaborate with regional and global product and application development teams as well as marketing and business functions to ensure that projects are aligned globally and meet customer/market needs.
  • Effectively manage multiple projects, ensuring clear alignment of timelines, goals and deliverables.
  • Develops new product ideas for presentation to marketing for future consideration in customer innovation events.
  • Accurately record raw data, analyze, calculate and interpret test results in a timely manner.
  • Work with outside laboratories to analyze samples to confirm product purity and quality.
  • Maintain raw material supply in laboratory including but not limited to vendor sample inventory and in-house chemical inventory.
  • Read and understand SDSs for all raw materials they will be working with.
  • Closely work with the sales and technical team to resolve problems, offer solutions and verify correct product use for applications.
  • Have knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).
  • Attend project meetings and prepare project updates with clear communication, presentation and reporting through written reports and PowerPoint presentations.
  • Prepare various size batches of newly developed chemicals for laboratory and field testing.
  • Open communication with blenders and stocking facilities on production of new products.
  • Create technical material for new products in collaboration with marketing.
  • Understand interaction of ingredients in formulations to better guide our customers on the use of the products.
  • Contribute to the safety team and aid in maintaining a safe working environment for all employees.
  • Willingness to travel to internal production sites to identify any issues in the making of products and suggest solutions to the issues.
  • Attend trade shows and conferences to research new and innovative ideas.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Formulation Science, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering or Material Science and minimum 5-7 years of experience as formulator, chemical sales or production manager. OR Master’s Degree in Chemistry, Formulation Science, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering or Material Science and 3-5 years of experience as formulator, chemical sales or production management.
  • Business fluent written and spoken English, additional language skills is an advantage.
  • Some supervisory/management experience is recommended.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written reports.
  • Effective project management and problem-solving skills.
  • Good organizational ability and strong attention to detail
